The Air Force only has one location for enlisted basic training: the 737th Training Group, at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas. Each year, over 35,000 new recruits go through Basic Training at Lackland. Officially, Air Force Basic Military Training (AFBMT) is six weeks long. The Air Force was first formed on September 18, 1947, following the passing of the National Security Act of 1947.[4] The Act created the Department of Defense, which was composed of three branches, the Army, Navy and a newly created Air Force.[5] Prior to 1947, military aviation was the responsibility of the Army, while the Navy maintained a fleet air arm on its fleet of aircraft carriers. The Army branch was known as the U.S. Army Air Corps and later the U.S. Army Air Forces. The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerospace branch of the United States armed forces. The USAF is the largest modern air force in the world, with over 9,000 aircraft in service and about 352,000 men and women on active duty.[2] Since World War I, the USAF and its predecessors have taken part in military conflicts throughout the world. The USAF is widely considered to be the most technologically advanced military air power. The stated mission of the USAF is "deliver sovereign options for the defense of the United States of America and its global interests -- to fly and fight in Air, Space, and Cyberspace".
